The Overcommittment Bubble

We make countless plans, commit to ourselves many things, set deadlines and then fail ourselves several times. Can you relate to this? Are you someone who always feels that you have a lot to do? Are you someone who sometimes lose your temper with the pressure of things pulling you from every direction?

I have been thinking about it lately and realized a few things which I am going to share with you. Firstly, why does it happen anyway? Why do we commit to so many things we somewhere know we will not be able to fulfill? It can be due to the below reasons

  1. Because you are someone who likes to take up many things.
  2. Because you have many responsibilities to take care of.
  3. Because you are someone who finds it difficult to say no to things.
  4. Because you are someone who has not really through things before committing.

The major problem associated with this is that it becomes suffering to you and people close to you. Many incomplete tasks in hand can make you feel anxious. You drop many plans in between. People around you start to lose confidence in you. You start to doubt your capabilities. This becomes a vicious cycle and you beat up yourself every single time. You often feel restless and directionless in your life.

How do you deal with this problem?

Firstly, it is about understanding that you have limited time in your hand and you must avoid taking a lot on your plate.

One task done with full commitment and dedication makes you feel a lot better about yourself than taking a hundred things and not completing a single one. So here I am sharing a few tips with you to

  1. Make a list of tasks/plans you want to execute and prioritize them based on their importance in your life. Give this task a lot of time.
  2. Cross off things/place things on the back burner which you do not find absolutely necessary.
  3. Find out how badly you want a particular thing in your life.
  4. Start with something small and evaluate your dedication. If you do not see yourself being sincere towards it, then it is better to put it aside for the time being.
  5. Set achievable goals. It is good to be ambitious but not to disappoint yourself with wrong expectations.
  6. Learn to say no to people and if possible delegate the task to someone else.

Are you able to relate to this? Are you finding the suggestions helpful? Let me know in the comment section.
